چکیده

OBJECTIVE To explore the relative safety of heparin thromboprophylaxis by comparing complication rates of 2 retrospective cohort groups. STUDY DESIGN After a change in departmental protocol to include 3 doses of unfractionated heparin for all patients undergoing cesarean deliveries, complication rates of cesarean deliveries before (n=501) and after (n=500) the policy change were compared. RESULTS Outcomes for postoperative hematocrit, estimated blood loss, platelet counts, and wound complications were not different between the 2 groups. CONCLUSION This regimen of heparin does not increase adverse acute postoperative outcomes, but more research is required to determine if it is efficacious in reducing rates of veinous thromboembolism.

Prophylaxis for venous thromboembolic disease in pregnancy and the early postnatal period.

BACKGROUND Venous thromboembolic disease (TED), although very rare, is a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity, hence methods of prophylaxis are often used for women at risk. This may include women delivered by caesarean section, those with a personal or family history of TED and women with inherited or acquired thrombophilias (conditions that predispose people to thrombosis). Many me...

Efficacy and safety of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis with fondaparinux in women at risk after cesarean section

Objectives Cesarean section is associated with an increased risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). The safety and efficacy of primary prophylaxis of fondaparinux, a synthetic sulfated pentasaccharide heparin analog, in women at risk after cesarean section is uncertain. Methods This was a retrospective study of 295 cases of pregnant women presenting to a tertiary referral center of Nara, Japan...

OBJECTIVE To compare the cost effectiveness of prophylaxis with a low-molecular-weight heparin with that of prophylaxis with unfractionated heparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in acutely ill medical inpatients. STUDY DESIGN Cost-effectiveness analysis based on decision-tree model. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS A hypothetical cohort of 10 000 patients was assumed to receive eithe...
